| Piebald Yemen Chameleon |
Pair of young adult 'full' Piebald Yemens. Female on your left, male on the right. |
Gravid female 'full' Piebald Yemen bred by myself in 2008. |
Female 'full' Piebald - basking mode. |
Same female as left (alert mode). Note part of her right eye turret is white and part is normal! |
This is a rare and unusual colour form of the Yemen chameleon where the normal Yemen Chameleon colour scheme is replaced
in certain areas (notably feet, legs, head and occasionally part of the tail) with various amounts of pink, white and sometimes
black. The amount and distribution of these colours is completely random which means that every individual of this strain is truly
unique.
Care is identical to that of the normal Yemen Chameleon.
Although strictly speaking this strain is correctly termed 'leucistic' the Piebald or 'Pied' (even 'transbald') the Piebald name seems
to have stuck and I will use it to describe mine, which I have available in very limited numbers as of Spring 2009.
'Full' Piebalds have several feet and limbs with white and pink up to, or a little higher than, the elbow or knee joint and will have a splash of white,
pink and sometimes black on the head.
Because some Piebalds have just a small white area on the tip of the snout or a pink foot I have termed these ‘low-end’ Piebalds and charge less for these.
They carry the Piebald gene but are less impressive than 'full' Piebalds
Two immature female 'full' Piebalds showing variable distribution of pink, white and a little black, as is typical of this colour form. |
Mixed clutch of Yemen Chameleons hatching 2008. This clutch contains 'full' Piebald, 'low-end' Piebald and normal babies. |
In addition to pink and white, some Piebalds have significant blotches of black as demonstrated by this juvenile female. |
Another gravid female 'full' Piebald Yemen. |
