I have no hesitation in recommending the Yemen Chameleon as a species suitable for both beginners and the more experienced reptile-keeper who is looking for an arboreal lizard with a unique way of life.
Whilst still relatively new to captivity the Yemen Chameleon is one of the most colourful and hardiest of the chameleons and the one most suited to captivity. As it is a semi-desert species it thrives in the relatively dry atmosphere of a typical modern centrally-heated house and is comfortable to tolerate a quite considerable drop in temperature overnight as well.
Whilst I don't handle mine very often they do become quite tame and can be handled regularly. A well-designed vivarium (see my care-sheet) and a ready supply of live insects up to adult locust size will ensure your chameleon lives a long and healthy life. Males make the most impressive captives although females are generally more docile and two females can be kept together if their cage is large enough.
